Because I'm a lover of design and all things beautiful my heart skipped a beat when I saw this beautiful little package in my mail. My amazingly talented friend, Alison at Sugar in NYC, always creates the coolest holiday gifts each year. This year I received my own little dream journal, designed with her beautiful illustrations. I love her details with the string, hang tag and label. I'm not sure I'll be able to use it just yet, not for a lack of desire to chronicle my dreams, but because I want to admire it for a while longer. Ooh, I can keep it next to my dream catcher that we bought while vacationing in Mexico last year. And that dream catcher has been busy.

Over Thanksgiving, while visiting my family in Indianapolis, I finally got a chance to visit the recently opened to the public Miller House & Gardens in Columbus, Indiana. Columbus has long been a mecca for modern architecture thanks to local visionary businessman, J. Irwin Miller.

In 1952 Miller commissioned Eero Saarinen, Alexander Girard and landscape architect, Dan Kiley to design his personal residence where he lived with his family for over 50 years. The stone and glass house is one of the greatest residences of the mid-20th century. Walking into the house today the architecture and interiors are timeless. The built-in tulip dining table is a precursor to the famous Saarinen Tulip table and the sunken conversation pit was the first of its kind. Saarinen's architecture is stunning, his use of marble walls and terrazzo floors are seamless from indoors to out. I am in love with the way Girard juxtaposed clean lines and cold surfaces with antique rugs, custom furniture and rich, colorful ethnic textiles.

Columbus, IN and the Miller House are architectural gems, worth a trip even if you don't have family in Indy.

I just spent a little time in Los Angeles with my dear friend Susan, too little actually, but it was inspiring and tons of fun! Lots of scouting, shopping, great food and a trip to the Rose Bowl flea market. I'm already feeling the pull to go back... here's a peek into my whirlwind trip.

I adore this store! Roseark and it's uber stylish jewelry designer and owner, Kathy Rose, first caught my eye on closetvisit.com. I am coveting her gold double tail cuff bracelet, but I walked away with a beautiful gold tattoo ring on this trip.

Super stylish blogger and mama to be, Chassity Evans of Look Linger Love, is having a baby boy. Of course when she asked me to pull together a concept for a would be nursery I jumped at the chance. I like to design nurseries and children's rooms that can grow as they grow. Babies spend a lot of time in their little room, but so do their parents. Chassity is such a fashionista that I couldn't imagine her and her bambino in anything other than a super chic nursery.

Every really good space needs a mix of materials and textures. It adds depth and interest. Natural materials like rattan, wicker and bamboo are among my favorites. There is a warmth and quality to them that can make a formal room feel inviting or a casual room feel chic. Of course it's also my love of all things tropical. The warmer, the greener, the more exotic the more I love it. Rattan is solid, flexible and light weight making it perfect for furniture while bamboo is hollow and somewhat more brittle. Wicker is a weaving process that can really be made with anything from bamboo reeds to plastic. What I especially love are rattan and wicker pieces that are modern and unexpected. Old or new, natural or painted, these materials find their way into almost every house that I design.

My daughter, Loulou, turned 9 yesterday. It really does go by in the blink of an eye. I am constantly amazed at her depth and breadth of creativity, her sweet personality, her genuine happiness for life and her loveliness. I aspire to be as creative as she is. I just stand back and let her ride her wave and watch and learn. At the age of seven she asked if the School of the Arts here in Charleston had a fashion design program. Well, it looks like the Lady in a Turban found a fabulous new home!

When Lindsay Bierman at Coastal Living magazine asked me to design their 2009 Idea Home I of course accepted. The next thing I did was call Molly B. Right and ask if she would create one of her amazing bottle cap portraits for the house. I delved into my research and laid out my palette and concepts for Molly, including paintings from Matisse's Moroccan period as well as pictures of Caribbean and island women. I told her I wanted a lady with a turban and left it at that. I knew she would create the perfect portrait... and she did. The portrait did not sell with the house, but a few months ago it found a permanent home with one Ms. Tyra Banks in New York City. According to Tyra, she can't stop staring at it, and I know exactly what she means. Molly's work is mesmerizing. I have my own thoughts about what I might commission Molly to do for me one day. In the mean time I'm sure the Lady in a Turban is enjoying her new digs.

Two of the most important elements of my work combine color and texture so I can't help but be drawn to the stunning work of Sheila Hicks. An internationally recognized artist, Hicks studied painting under Josef Albers at Yale, but it was South America where she developed a passion for working with fibers. She went on to live in Mexico, Morocco, India and now divides her time between New York City and Paris. Most of her work is in the form of wall hangings, but over the years she has produced numerous large scale commissions. Her fiber art sculptures are created using many methods, including knitting, knotting, bonding, felting and tufting. I love her vivid use of color, experimental and innovative approach and her use of natural materials. Her works are in the permanent collections of the MOMA, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Philadelphia Museum of Art, The Rhode Island School of Design and Center Pompidou in Paris.

Some of her works can be found for sale through artnet, the Cristina Grajales Gallery and 1st dibs. As for me I am awaiting my copy of the book, Sheila Hicks: Weaving as Metaphor, put out by The Bard Graduate Center and designed by Dutch graphic designer Irma Boom. It received the most beautiful book in the world award when it was published in 2006. As a graphic designer I can't wait to get my hands on this baby.

Tonight I'm going to see Prince live in concert so I thought what better day to post about my favorite color, purple... well one of my favorites, turquoise will have to wait for another time. I've always been drawn to purple in all shades... lavender, plum, amethyst, lilac, fuchsia, orchid, violet. I find it original, creative, strong and sexy not to mention an incredibly happy color. I use it all the time in every environment. So I hope you get inspired by some of these purple lovelies below. In the mean time I'm going to spend the evening getting my groove on. Sophia's Vintage Suzani

I'm currently designing a little girl's bedroom, which is so fun. Her name is Sophia, she's three and adorable with wispy blond hair and big blue eyes. I can't wait for you to see it, but in the mean time while concepting for her room I decided upon a vintage suzani that I'm going to use to make big pillows for the twin beds. What I didn't realize when I ordered it was that it was actually coming from Uzbekistan. So you can imagine my delight when I got to work and saw this beautiful package. Simple, but nothing like the way we package here in the states. No tape, just brown craft paper, simply tied off with string and finished with a wax seal, yes a wax seal. The receipt is on some sort of newsprint which was nicely folded and stapled around the string and it made it here without so much as a scuff mark. It sat here for almost two days before I opened it. I just kept staring at it and thinking I want it to stay just like that. Eventually my office mate and I scurried to take pictures before the big unveiling. The suzani of course is exquisite and will be perfect in little Sophia's new room.

Being the mother of a 5 year old boy who loves all things pirates (and all things Star Wars) I constantly find myself attracted to skull & crossbones imagery. I even bought myself a Christmas present this past year when I found a super cool silver and brass necklace with a skull & bones pendant. I love things that have meaning or tell a story and I often wear it along with my other lockets. Once I found my necklace it seemed that everywhere I turned there it was, the skull & bones (or often times only the skull), and not just for kids. I suppose it could seem kind of morbid, but somehow there is an edge to it that I think is rather fun.

I am fortunate to have some truly terrific clients, so much so that they often turn into friendships. That was the case when I met Carolyn Evans. We had our first meeting and we were instant friends. We had a ball working on her beautiful Charleston single house and when Lindsay Bierman, editor in chief at Southern Living, called me last year to see if I might have any upcoming projects I knew Carolyn & Ray's house would be perfect. Carolyn is quite the woman herself, singer/songwriter and author of the new book, 40 Beads: The Simple, Sexy Secret for Transforming Your Marriage, which will be available April 26th. I have a feeling we will be seeing a lot more of her soon.

I am a mad lover of books and the Nook, the Kindle and the iPad all have me wary of the future of actual hand held, beautifully designed books. I love to hold them, read them, look at them, be inspired by them and surrounded by them. I'm also a graphic designer so my heart skips a beat when I see a book that is magnificently designed or has a really smart cover. As an interior designer I try to incorporate bookshelves whenever possible in a space. They instantly add a feeling of warmth, depth and interest. They can become an entire wall of art. They do need to be styled, but they don't have to be perfect. I incorporate found objects, pottery and art when I'm designing bookshelves and I often hang large artwork on top for a layered look. Books don't only have to go on shelves, they can be stacked on the floor, lined up against the wall, placed in stacks on chairs or ottomans, or displayed on a coffee table or dining room table. I think books can tell you so much about a person when you enter a home and I love looking at bookshelves to see what they might reveal. Are the homeowners art lovers? Do they lean to the right or to the left? Do they like poetry or are they history buffs? Whatever I find I think it's fascinating. I am willing to let go of some things, but the printed book is not one of them.

I'm not sure why I'm so drawn to portraiture in art. Maybe it's all of the questions that it brings to mind. Where were they? Who were they? Did they sit for it or was it painted from a photograph? Were they created in the artist's mind? We all have a story. What was theirs? I don't, however, particularly care for stuffy or realistic portraits. I like them more original, sometimes even abstract. Here you will find an array, some of which are in my own collection and a couple that I covet.

Not really, but I'm loving all of these vibrant colors. Color plays a big role in my work and my life. It's probably the one thing that people comment on most when referring to my work. Like anyone I have my favorites, purple and turquoise to be specific, but I love the entire spectrum. Color mixing comes naturally for me, but I also don't think there is any wrong color. It's really how you play them off of one another. I recently designed an instant room for an upcoming issue of House Beautiful and used yellow, hot pink, dark blue and shades of purple. Now it seems that everywhere I look I am gravitating to these bold and vibrant colors. I love all things retro and right now these colors are making me love the 80's.

Not only do I get to call beautiful Charleston, SC my home, but I also get to work in one of the coolest neighborhoods in town. I also happen to share studio space with some of the most talented and coolest girls around. Leigh Magar, of the very well known Magar Hatworks, owns the building and has her prodigious studio and work room on the first floor. Stacey Bradley, creator of Perla Anne, and photographer Julia Lynn along with myself reside upstairs. Julia recently photographed our spaces and Courtney Barnes at style court just posted a lovely story on the four of us, Women at Work: Julia, Angie, Stacey and Leigh. I am thrilled to have these girls among my closest friends. Although we sometimes have to stop ourselves from chatting it up so we can get some work done.

I am in love with this old world kitchen in a house off the coast of Italy.

Given the opportunity I would tile an entire room... wall, floors, ceiling. Of course it has to be amazing tile and I have been smitten with this Paccha tile from Ann Sacks for quite sometime. I am dying to use it in my own kitchen someday. In the meantime I am combining the exotic old world craftsmanship of these Tabarka Studio tiles with the clean lines of a modern day kitchen in one of my current projects. I am of course drawn to the more graphic patterns. I used a similar more subtle combination to great effect in the Coastal Living Idea Home kitchen that I designed last year.

Check out the new issue of Garden & Gun and you will see some amazing creations from a slew of talented folks across the south. A couple of my favorites include my friend and office mate Leigh Magar. I get to see these handmade beauties everyday in her studio downstairs and of course I have one of my own. And I can't wait to get my hands on a bottle of organic Roobie Red Tea from my hometown of Louisville, KY. My very own LOVE sculpture on my desk at work.

I love collecting art, mostly abstract and mid-century portraits, but I'm also a graphic designer and often quite sentimental. So naturally, being a native of Indiana, I love Robert Indiana's iconic LOVE sculpture. Part of the Pop Art scene and created during the peace movement, Robert Indiana's first LOVE show opened at the Stable Gallery in 1966. It was then created into a postage stamp in 1973. I often buy the stamps on ebay. I also have a vintage paperweight and a gold love charm. Now I'm just holding out for an original silkscreen. This is certainly one thing we can never have too much of.
